Problems with legacy systems

Legacy systems today hang around businesses like the fabled albatross. Despite the blatant disadvantages these systems have, and despite much superior alternatives available, they continue to be used. This may be due to several reasons that may range from plain inertia of the users and management to financial constraints. But most organizations fail to gauge that using a newer system is almost always more rewarding in the long run.

Here are a few reasons why legacy systems just do not go with a progressive business

  • Monolithic legacy architectures are opposite to modern distributed and layered architectures.
  • Legacy systems execute business policies and decisions that are rigid, predefined process flows, making integration with other software and Internet-based business applications difficult and sometimes impossible.
  • Most legacy applications are no longer a user-friendly owing to poor interface designing in the first place, or due to patched maintenances. Poor response times and scattered information are some of the problems faced by the users. This in turn means that users spend much more time at completing a task than they should.
  • Legacy systems barricade the entry of newer technology and applications as maintenance of old and new systems will call for unnecessary duplication and development staff
  • IT departments find it increasingly difficult to hire developers qualified to work on applications written in languages no longer found in modern technologies.
  • Legacy systems are a hangover from the pre-Internet business world. Legacy systems have to be overhauled so that a company's operations can integrate seamlessly with the Internet and Internet applications. There is considerable corporate resistance to upgrading legacy systems, which is unsurprising when some estimates believe the investment in legacy systems to be over $4 trillion worldwide.

There are options other than abandoning a legacy system entirely. These can be termed are legacy modernization.
